It has been another fabulous year of amazing adventures and experiences, walks and talks here in WA! Let’s wrap up 2024 and celebrate what’s to come in the New Year with our annual Christmas event.
Pinkies up, legs crossed at the ankles and napkins on knees… join us for our Adventurous Women’s Christmas Party and a final fond farewell to our magnificent and inspirational AW creator and leader Sue Hile and her lovable right hand man Brad.
What’s not to love about getting dolled up in a fancy outfit, eating tiny cakes and finger sandwiches, sipping bubbles or tea, catching up with dear friends and making new acquaintances. Weekends are for decadence and what better way to end your week on an indulgent high than at a delectable and delightful High Tea.
But first... as we do at Adventurous Women, we love to impart information on our various adventures … so … back in the 1840’s when Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford, felt peckish in those long hours from luncheon to dinner, little did she know her request to have small sweet and savoury treats brought to her at about 4pm every day would be the genesis of what has become that most English of meals, High Tea.The Duchess was a pal of Queen Victoria’s and it wasn’t long before the monarch got on board with the refined ceremony of afternoon tea (it was only ever called high tea by the hoi polloi and still is) and once it had the royal seal of approval every Victorian era lady just had to go with the latest fad and partake.
Thanks to the Duchess, afternoon High Tea was born.Interestingly enough, it was about this time that the Earl of Sandwich put pieces of meat between sliced bread and in doing so invented the sandwich, which was just in time because when the Duchess of Bedford requested her afternoon tea, the servants - who were clearly on trend - made the exciting new sandwiches and filled them with thinly sliced roast beef or cucumber or smoked salmon, which are still staples on afternoon High Tea trays to this very day.
And here we are, 180 years later, and afternoon High Tea has not just endured, it’s more popular than ever. We look forward to you joining us at the Duxton Hotel for an exquisitely presented High Tea of sweet and savoury delights, an array of teas, barista coffee, a flute of bubbles or a non-alcoholic drink and, in the spirt of Adventurous Women, we would love you to join in the festivity of the day, if you choose to, and add some Christmas flair to your outfit.
