Escape, Experience and Encounter … Barna Mia and Dryandra Woodland provides the perfect opportunity to spend quality time in nature. Join us for the most amazing weekend away… mingling with the mammals!
We stay at the Lions Dryandra Woodland Village in the restored woodcutters cottages amongst the Dryandra Woodlands, a world recognised biodiversity hotspot, where over 850 species of flora can be seen throughout the year. Wandoo woodlands, mallet plantations and diverse heathlands support possums, woylies, kangaroos, numbats, echidnas, bird, reptiles and insects.
Friday self drive to the accommodation for check in any time from 2pm (talk to us if you would like to carpool and we will assist in arranging this for you). Your Adventurous Women Host will be there to greet you and show you to your room/cottage. Settle in, relax and enjoy the surrounds.
As the sun begins to set, join together at your Adventurous Women Host's Cottage for a welcome glass of bubbly and some nibbles. Afterwards, dinner and dessert will be served by your host, followed by the opportunity to join her on the Wandoo Night Walk, which is a short night walk with markers that reflect torchlight. You will be looking out for nocturnal animals such as woylies, tammar wallabies, brushtail possums, tawny frog-mouths and owls among the wandoo trees and heath vegetation.
On Saturday morning after breakfast, you have the option to relax around the village, or join your Adventurous Women Host for a guided hike on the Lol Gray Trail, a 12.5km loop trail considered as a Grade 3 hike - suitable for those who enjoy a longer bushwalk where there are some short steep hill sections to navigate and rocky ground at times underfoot. There is an option for those who aren't up to tackling the whole 12.5km Lol Gray Trail, whereby you can return on the shorter 6 km loop to the village (self guided) if you prefer. On the Lol Gray Trail you will see the diverse vegetation types and enjoy spectacular views over Dryandra near the old Lol Gray tree fire tower, which was built in 1930 and used by the Forest Department as a lookout for fires.
Once back at the accommodation in the afternoon, there's time to explore, relax, refresh and join together for an early dinner at your Host's cottage, before setting off together to Barna Mia for an amazing Nocturnal Wildlife Experience!!
This experience offers the visitor a rare opportunity to observe threatened Western Australian species up close and personal in their natural habitat. We arrive just after sunset and step out into the starlit night, walking along the illuminated pathways, with the gregarious Boodies shunting their way through the bush searching for insects, fungi and seeds. We wander through Wandoo woodland and Sheoak thickets and experience the absolute wonder of the woodland on this amazing nocturnal animal viewing adventure. We may see Woylies, Boodies, Mala, Bilby's, Quenda and Possums.
The following day, after a leisurely breakfast, pack up your bags, check out of the accommodation and join your AW host for a guided hike on the the 5.5km, Grade 3 Woylie Walk. This walk starts at the Old Mill Dam in the Dryandra Woodland and weaves its way through woodlands of wandoo, powderbark, kwongan heathlands, jarrah and stands of sheoak. Look out for woylie diggings in the area and numbats and echidnas searching for termites.
After the hike, it's time to say your goodbye's and make your way home, feeling refreshed and re-energised after a wonderful weekend away in the woods!!
