The Heritage Trail covers the 100km from Augusta to Busselton and traces the early history of the area through the movements of the Bussell and Molloy families who settled in Augusta in May, 1830 and subsequently moved up the coast looking for suitable agricultural land.
Many of you are no doubt aware that Western Australia boasts a couple of well known long distance hiking trails in this region - The Bibbulmun Track and the well travelled Cape to Cape Track, but very little is known about this trail. It was created for the bicentenary of Australian colonisation in 1988, but it's been neglected over the years and almost forgotten, so we're extremely excited to be sharing it with a select few, walking the highlights, sharing the history, connection to country and exploring stories that remain untold.
Adventurous Women have put together a fabulous experience retracing the footsteps of the pioneers, showcasing the best walking sections, with visits to all the historical sites and points of interest along the way, exploring towns at either end and in between, traversing farmlands, river pools, bush and backroads.
This experience is for those who are interested in history and beautiful walking trails, coupled with easy to moderate walking days, no heavy backpacks, nice lodgings, good food and good company .. and maybe a cheeky vino or two as the accommodation is right on the doorstep of a winery!!
This morning we collect you from the Perth CBD and travel to Augusta where we enjoy lunch on the foreshore. Today's walk commences where the first settlers landed in Augusta in 1830 and is the start of the Heritage trail. Visiting the early pioneer sites as you walk around the inlet, our guides will provide an insight into the life of the early settlers including the Molloy and the Bussell families.
Once we've finished our walk this afternoon, we head off to our accommodation and settle in for the next four nights. Our Guides will prepare dinner, while you relax, take a stroll around the property, or maybe indulge in a spa!
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
We continue on the Heritage trail from near where we finished yesterday. The terrain now changes as we move away from the Blackwood river and into areas of farmland where we've gained permission from private landowners to enter, so we can retrace this lovely section. A couple of surprises along the way and a visit to another historical site will provide you with lots to talk about around the dinner table tonight.
Once again after a satisfying day, we head back to our accommodation to relax in stunning surrounds.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The next section crosses farmland, then returns to the bush as we make our way back to the Blackwood River, near an area that was used as a rest stop for pioneers travelling north. Another delightful part of the trail that's sure to please.
Our afternoon will be spent exploring the quirky little township of Witchcliffe and surrounds, before heading back to our accommodation. For those who would like to partake in a little local Margaret River wine-tasting we can accommodate. For those who aren't wanting this option, maybe you can duck off now and enjoy time to yourself ... spa, book, nap??
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We pick up the trail today a bit further north from where we finished, making our way to another pool along the river and later visiting a significant water crossing that the pioneers used in their journey north . Our Guides will provide some interesting and little known facts on the location.....plenty to explore today.
After another wonderful day on the trail, it's back to base for chill time.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We pick up the Heritage trail out of Busselton and en-route visit the site of historical homes where two well-known pioneer families settled after their relocation from Augusta to Busselton. We then continue the short drive into Busselton and then commence walking to visit several sites related to the pioneers and their life in this region, before finishing at the trailhead.
After celebrating our retracing of this very little known trail, we then travel back from Busselton to Perth and say our goodbyes.
