Terrain : Moderate undulations and creek crossings
The track winds through open bushland filled with *Xanthorrhoea (Grasstree) and eucalypts such as the Mallee Ash (Eucalyptus codonocarpa) - a species under threat in the region.
* If you spot any large xanthorrhoea, chances are they have been growing since before Europeans came to Australia.
After about an hour and a half of walking we will enter a lush gully that is home to the Lower Portals. Here, we will walk along the creek bank and take in the many large rock pools that are filled with crystalline water - it can be pretty cold in the Autumn/Winter months but is still worth taking a quick dip to cool off and revitalise for the walk back.
Pack your lunch for a picnic by the big pools and we may even be lucky to spot a goanna.
