The social walk has 2 sections: Linda Garrett Conservation area and Wompoo Circuit including Mapleton Falls.
Linda Garrett purchased the $500,000 parcel of land and donated it for conservation and it has since become a world heritage park! The Great Barred Frog makes its home along the banks of Gheerulla Creek that runs through this circuit. The track leads us through lush rainforest, a Piccabeen Palm grove, and beautiful Eucalypt forest.
We then head out of Mapleton National Park along a back street to the nearby Mapleton Falls National Park. Here we find a hidden gem - Wompoo Circuit. This circuit track, named after the Wompoo fruit dove, winds through rainforest and eucalypt forest with wayside signage providing interesting information en-route regarding the flora and fauna. Listen for the wompoo fruit-dove calling from its treetop feedings sites with a booming 'wallock-a-woo' and 'book-a-roo'.
A side track takes us to a lookout with views of Pencil Creek cascading one hundred and twenty metres over the escarpment, down into the Obi Obi Valley. These falls are the Mapleton Falls - a truly spectacular sight and a great place for a snack and a treat from the AW Pantry. Another side track takes us to the Peregrine lookout and provides good views back towards Mapleton Falls and over the Obi Obi Valley.
We then complete Wompoo Circuit on our way back to the Linda Garrett trailhead car park.
Please note: There is no toilet at trailhead, but there is one midway at Mapleton Falls picnic area
