Join your hosts Caron and Kat from AW, along with Kyle and Michael from 2530.tours for a paddle around Coochiemudlo Island, just off Victoria Point, Qld.
Coochiemudlo is Quandamooka Country - Quandamooka meaning ‘the area of Moreton Bay’. The spiritual significance of the rich red ochre, visible from the mainland on the island's southern flank, is reflected in the name chosen by the Quandamooka People of the Jandai language group. ‘Goochie mudlo’ for 'red earth' and 'rock' or 'stone' (also recorded as ‘kutchi mudlo’) became ‘Coochiemudlo’ as it is known today.
Passing by the magical mangroves we begin to realise just how essential this habitat is in the breeding cycle of many marine species - mangroves are often described as a 'nursery' for fish, prawns and crabs.
Keep a look out for turtles and dugongs grazing on the seagrass beds as we paddle past Morwong Beach and around the corner past the 'tree cemetery', where century-old trees were felled by heavy weather and sand erosion. Their bleached and bizarre shapes are a photographer's delight.
Morning tea and a leg stretch is a little further along at Coochie's Melaleuca Wetlands, situated at the island's northeast. These swampy, densely-grown wetlands are home to a great diversity of birds year around.
Once rested, we continue our paddle past Main Beach and the jetty, back to Victoria Point.
Some experience is preferred for this paddle. However, the experienced team from 25.30 Tours will give you instructions and make sure you are confident before we head out.
