Join Chris for this lengthy but not overly difficult hike at Ewan Maddock dam. (It's Grade 3 rating is only really due to the length)
We will initially follow the lakes edge before moving into the surrounding woodland which has benefited from the improvements and rejuvenation over the past few years as part of the dam upgrades before heading towards the edge of the reserve and following the boundary back towards our starting point to enjoy a cuppa and sweet treat.
Along the way we will be sharing some parts of the trail with bike and horse riders and pass through some nice mixed woodlands with plenty of shade and the sounds of the plentiful bird life both on the dam and in the treed areas.
Please note: Toilets are available at our meeting point and it's worth noting that the path can can be muddy after rain so boots are recommended.
Ewen Maddock was an early pioneer of Mooloolah. In 1897, Ewen selected a site on a nearby ridge and with the help of their neighbour, built a small cottage called "Koongamoon". At age 49, Ewen married a school teacher named Harriett Poole. He acquired his own bullock team and also worked as a benchman at the sawmill. The couple tried their hand at poultry and dairy farming which they worked at until shortly before Harriett's death in 1952. Ewen Maddock died on the 5th of April 1973, aged 100 years. He was buried in Mooloolah Cemetery alongside other family members.
The original cottage was eventually demolished, however the bunya pines that Ewen planted in 1900 still stand today and serve as reminders of the Maddock Era. As a mark of respect, a replica of the cottage was built at the Ewen Maddock Dam Recreation Centre on the dam's south-eastern shore
