Join us as we explore Perth's largest inner metropolitan wetland. The breathtakingly beautiful morning water views, abundance of birdlife and eerie paperbark cathedrals will blow you away!

Herdsman Lake is just one of a number of lakes, with the inner lake being a seasonally dry wetland dominated by bull rush thickets and surrounded by a moat of four man-made permanent water bodies; Industrial Lake (also known as Popeye Lake), Floreat Lakes, Floreat Water and Powis Lake.

The lake system is home to over 100 species of birds, some of which have come from the other side of the world. If we're lucky we may see the floating nests of the horny headed grebe and great crested grebe out on the open water but closer to shore there is always an abundance of black swans, purple swamp hens, Australian white ibis and reed-warblers as well ducks galore.

We will be passing through a diversity of landscapes ranging from expansive views over open water, to dense wetlands filled with rushes, fragments of paperbark and flooded Gum woodlands and open grass parklands.

As we make our way around the lake we will detour to the Settlers Cottage, a historical little four room cottage built in the 1930’s and looked after by the Heritage Trust were we will be able to stop and enjoy our lunch on the sheltered verandah.

The cottage also boasts resident studio artists Ros Blackburn, who is inspired by the natural environment and oil painter Gail Leidich, whose favourite subjects are seascapes and forests. Stunning paintings both large and small as well as handmade jewellery and quilting patterns are on display and for sale. So make sure you pop your credit card in your pocket… just in case !!!

The highlight of the day is the impressive Olive Seymour Boardwalk at the end of our circuit, where we walk among the Paperbark trees on an elevated walkway out into the lake.

Distance: 9.5km Loop walk - 5 hours

Style of Walk:  Parkland Lake, Easy and flat but long, Paved walkways, bush pathways, boardwalks, limestone tracks
